How to Make Your Own Natural Air Fresheners

aerosol air freshenerIt may be easy and convenient to just buy air fresheners from a retailer, but you may want to think about the bigger picture. Most air fresheners come in aerosol cans. While the notion that aerosol depletes the ozone has been largely debunked, you should be worried about chemicals inside aerosols. These are small particles that can coat your lungs and cause breathing problems over time. They are especially harmful for small children and sickly people.

Instead of buying your air fresheners from the store and suffering the side effects, you can make a great air freshener using common household ingredients.

Spray Freshener

You can get all the convenience of a spray freshener without the side effects of an aerosol can. All you need is a spray bottle and a couple of ingredients. Specifically, just a little baking soda and essential oil mixed with water will do the trick.

Take an average-sized spray bottle, fill it with as much water as you like, then mix in a tablespoon of baking soda and around 35 drops of your favorite essential oil. The kind of oil you use won’t matter. You just want the scent to be nice. It’s the baking soda mixed with water that really does the trick of freshening the air for you. With this easy recipe, you can make any room smell like your favourite essential oil.

Jar Air freshener

You can get an air freshener in a jar as well. Not everyone wants to spray their house to make it smell better. Sometimes, just having the air freshener sit on the table works better. You don’t have to apply it yourself, as it freshens the room on its own.

Once again, essential oils and baking soda are going to do the trick nicely. Just leave the water out of this one though.

Take about a quarter of a cup of baking soda and put it into a glass jar. Any empty jelly or pickle jar will do. Then cover the baking soda with a few drops of whatever essential oil you want to use. It should only take five or six drops for the desired effect.

Then cover the jar and poke some holes into it. You can use a hammer and a nail for that, if you like. The air freshening effect should last for a few hours. When the oils don’t permeate the room any more, just add a few more drops.

These are just a few quick recipes you can use to make your home smell nicer with a little bit of effort. You may not notice the effects of aerosol sprays right away, but over time they take their toll. So next time your home smells funky, don’t use the aerosol. Just take a few ingredients you are likely have around your house and make something that freshens just as well without any harmful side effects to be concerned about.
